by the police activity outside this sikh temple which is again south of milwaukee they are not taking cover. we are not seeing, you know, snipers at the ready assisting the s.w.a.t. team that is we understand inside the temple right now. so one would sort of suspect by looking at the outside of the temple and the activity going on there isn't a sense of urgency and they may feel as though there is just one shooter. that shooter is now down according to the chief of police. we are also getting one other detail here. one police officer has reportedly been shot, is being treated, expected to survive. there is no total victim count. two at the hospital right now that we know of. one in critical condition. we don't know and don't have confirmed as you point out, are rice, any other suspects who may be inside but they are clearly going through room by room trying to rescue those who mae be hiding potential victim there's. but just the sense here from watching the outside is they may feel as though they have this under control and that this may be a lone gunman. harris? >> you know, when all of this n

terrible outburst of violence, a shooting, a bad one inside a sikh temple in suburban milwaukee. there was a lot of confusion initially as police responded and the first victims there were air lifted out. tonight the details hav become a bit clearer and this initially is being treated as an act of domestic terrorism. nbc's john yang is at the scene and starts us off in oak creek, wisconsin. good evening. >> reporter: the description of domestic terrorism comes from local authorities. the fbi is now on the scene, as well. law enforcement officials are telling nbc news details about this alleged gunman. they say he is a man in his 30s. he was wearing tactical gear, armed with a single handgun. right now officials are searching what they believe to be his home looking for clues about his motive. the 911 calls began at 10:25 a.m. unfire at the sikh templeal in wisconsin. worshippers said one service ended and another about to begin. families were gathering. >> our officer was ambushed, shot multiple times. he is currently at the hospital undergoing surgery. we expect him to recover.

that they were accompanied by south milwaukee police and the local police made the arrest on the firearms charge. the arrest and the firearms charge will be handled by police and not by the fbi. >> so as we are waiting to obviously hear more on the investigation into wade page's background and anything more we can gather from the arrest of his girlfriend misty cook what are you learning about the temple? when will it open? what more are you hearing from the community? >> the last we heard from the fbi, the special agent in charge said her heart goes out to people who worship there. they know they want to get back into the temple as soon as possible. she was saying because of the meticulous nature of the investigation they are having to take their time. she said it may be the earliest date possibly would be thursday before they could be allowed to get back in there. today the roads are still blocked going into the temple behind me. the police are still there on the scene. the mayor of the town here telling me yesterday the difficulty was because of shots that were fired into the police vehicles.

. the suburb we are talking about, milwaukee. suburb of milwaukee called oak creek. >> the caller said at the time that one gunman had entered the temple and started shooting multiple people at that point were shot. people were trained side we presume that they are still trapped inside. many of them may well be women and children gathering before a larger gathering later on in the morning. a short time ago police gave us an update, telling us that police officer engaged with the gunman that was outside. that police officer was shot several times. 's currently being treated at a local hospital but he managed to get off another shots to that gunman and kill him, or at least put him down. that gunman is presumed dead outside the temple. at this point what we still don't know is if there is another shooter inside that temple. police tactical teams are inside trying to make sweeps and contain this situation. the word that the police say is that they had the situation contained. that doesn't mean that it's cleared or deemed safe. three people, as you mentioned, three men being treated at loc

sunday's attack at a temple near milwaukee that took the lives of six worshippers. in what officials called an act of domestic teorism, a gunman with neo-nazi ties opened fire as local sikhs, or "sicks" as some adherents call themselves, had gathered for a worship service. religious groups across the spectrum condemned the attack. many communities held prayer services and vigils to remember the victims and to pray for religious tolerance. groundswell, the social action initiative of auburn seminary in new york, gathered thousands of messages of hope and healing for milwaukee's sikh community. they called the project "we're all sikhs today." oundell's director valarie kaur, who is sikh, delivered the messages in person. she joins me now from milwaukee. valarie, thank you for being with us. why did you feel it was important to bring these messages? >> well, this is a tragedy not just for the sikh community, but for all americans, and i know that many americans were hungry to express their love and support in some way. they understand that this is deeply personal for every sikh american

,000-foot temple south of milwaukee, by about nine miles. a sikh temple. in the community of oak creek. where a gunman opened fire earlier today. seven confirmed dead, one of those is the gunman who lays outside. right now police are doing a complete sweep inside. obviously tending to some of the victims as well that remain inside by trying to sweep that building to make sure that there isn't a second gunman. they have the situation contained at least having it inside that but they want to make sure that they can clear that building such that medical personnel can then get into that temple and attend to the survivors of this horrific event. >> just to tell you how it went down, 10:25 central time they said that the police department received multiple calls, that there was a shooting inside of this temple, it was in oak creek there. they said just about 20 minutes -- just a few minutes later, a 20-year veteran of the police department was on scene at this temple. they said that that veteran officer exchanged gunfire with the shooter, and they said that gunman was taken down, they believ

time a 911 call went into the oak creek police department just south of milwaukee where a shooting took place at that sikh temple. a gunman killing six people that we know of. many more were injured including women and children were just recently let out of the basement of that facility. an officer engaged with this gunman at the time outside of the temple. he managed to shoot the gunman down. the gunman is presumed dead. that officer shot pumultiple tis taken to an area hospital and is being worked on as we speak. there were as many as 30 to 50 people estimates trapped inside that temple. police tactical forces were inside the facility which is about 17,000 square feet. there you see it, a large facility that they had to sweep through and check the nooks and crannies for the possibility of a second gunman. that so far has not been confirmed. we are awaiting another press conference in about 30 minutes. >> i would like to welcome our viewers here in the united states and our viewers from around the world. i'm don lemon here at the cnn head quarters in atlanta. we are speaking now and ge
